AppleCD 300 and 300i≈Apple CD 300 Product OverviewΩΩThe new AppleCD 300 is a high-performance, feature-rich CD-ROM drive compared to the existing AppleCD 150 (or other competitive products). It’s faster transfer rate (300 KB/sec - twice that of the 150) allows higher quality video to be stored on CD-ROM discs. And with faster access times, it provides users with quicker access to information. It can read multi-session Kodak Photo CD discs, and it supports other formats such as CD+G and CD+MIDI, providing access to a greater range of CD-ROM titles. Ω ΩIn addition to the external CD 300 peripheral, Apple will also introduce an internal upgrade drive kit that will allow users with Macintosh CPUs that have an available 5.25" half-height drive bay to add the CD 300 internally. These CPUs will include the: Macintosh IIvi and vx, Macintosh Centris 610 and 650, Macintosh Quadra 800 and 950. This upgrade will be available only as a dealer-installable kit and will begin shipping by June ’93. Because of varying CPU designs, a different bezel and mounting kit will be required for each Macintosh CPU.≈Apple CD 300 SpecificationsΩΩPerformance characteristics:Ω• Average access time at normal speed (1x): Ω 360 milliseconds; at double speed (2x): 295 msΩ• Data streaming rate, normal speed (1X) in Mode 1: 150 Ω KB/second; in Mode 2: 171 KB/second Ω• Data streaming rate, double speed (2X) in Mode 1: 300 Ω KB/second; in Mode 2: 342 KB/secondΩ• SCSI bus transfer burst rate (over one CD-ROM block): Ω 2.5 megabytes/sec. We decided to be conservative because of vendor testing and time constraint issues). Ω• Average access time of 295 milliseconds (in the 2X Ω mode) for faster access to informationΩ• 256K buffer for faster data transfer rates (64KB is theΩ industry norm today) ΩΩCompatibility:Ω• Fully compatible with Macintosh operating system software, including System 7 and QuickTimeΩ• Supports industry-standard ISO 9660 and High Sierra file formatsΩ• Supports Mac HFS file formatΩ• Reads Kodak multi-session Photo CD discs, thus providing easy access to high-quality images that can be stored on a Photo CD disc.Ω• Supports CD-ROM XA (for audio decompression will need separate ADPCM hardware/software). The XA support allows developers to create new titles and users to access them. CD Bridge discs (Photo CD is an example) can be read because of XA support in the drive. (See below for more details)ΩΩFeature: Supports CD+G, CD+MIDI formats.ΩBenefit: Support of these formats will allow content developers to create newer and more exciting titles for CD-ROM users. (see below) ΩΩFeature: Supports CD-Digital Audio over SCSIΩBenefit: This allows the user to bring in digital audio data to the Macintosh over the SCSI bus. This data can then be edited (with appropriate software) and then be re-recorded on to a recordable media. Musicians (both amateur and professional), in particular, will find this to be an attractive and exciting feature. Ω• plays standard CD audio discs. The CD Remote feature allows title selection, custom play list creation, and volume control from the monitor.ΩΩEase of use:Ω• plug-and-play compatibility with the Macintosh computer (SE and above)Ω• set up and use in minutesΩ• easy, cost-effective network access to an AppleCD 300 drive that is attached to an AppleShare file serverΩΩReliability:Ω• MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures): 125,000 hours (at 20% duty cycle at 35° C)Ω• Automatic lens cleaning mechanism to minimize dustΩ• Front-loading mechanism has a double-door for added protection against dust≈What are CD-ROM XA, CD+G,CD+MIDI, etc.?ΩΩ• CD-ROM XA: XA, which stands for Extended Architecture, was initially created as a bridge between CD-ROM and CD-I. It allows computer data, video/picture data and compressed audio data to be put on the same track. With proper interleaving a CD-ROM track can play audio, video and computer data at what appears to be the same time. This facilitates interactive applications. In non-XA formats, the CD-ROM drive cannot read computer data while it is playing an audio track. To read the compressed audio data , additional ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) hardware/software (not included in the CD 300) is needed to decompress the audio. Photo CD is a type of Bridge disc that uses the XA format. Apple’s support of XA allows users access to new titles that are expected to be introduced.Ω• CD+G, CD+MIDI: These refer to CD-ROM information that is stored in what are called subcode channels R-W. The ability of a drive to read this information allows access to a larger range of CD-ROM titles. CD+G defines a way to overlay graphics and audio information on a CD to allow it be played synchronously. CD+MIDI allows MIDI synthesizers connected to Macs to be played to by MIDI data on a CD-ROM disc. Currently there are very few CD+G and CD+MIDI discs available for the CD-ROM market. Apple’s support of these formats will encourage content developers to create new titles.≈CD-ROM Setup SoftwareΩΩThe driver software version shipped with the CD 300 (external and internal upgrades) is v4.0.1. It allows Kodak multisession Photo CD discs to be read with the drive when QuickTime is loaded on the Mac CPU. This version is backwards compatible with the Apple CD 150, the CD SC Plus as well as the original CD SC. The software, when used with QuickTime, allows these older drives access to single-session Photo CD discs, even with the CD SC.≈≈

ColorSync≈ColorSync OverviewΩΩColorSync, Apple’s new color-matching architecture for the Macintosh, is a system extension that enables consistent color across the system. This extension provides system level color matching services to all applications, scanners, displays, and printers. ColorSync allows for the color of the original art you scan to be the same color that appears on your display—and the color you see on the display will be the same when it is printed.ΩΩThe result is more consistent and predictable color-matching results from all of your color applications, whether you are producing desktop presentations and newsletters or color film separations.ΩΩColorSync provides both the ability to match between input, display, and output as well as new capabilities, such as the ability to preview the color matched document, which applications can take advantage of in the future.≈ColorSync SpecificationsΩΩ• A color-capable Apple Macintosh personal computer with System 7 or later and 4 MB of RAM for optimal performance.≈ColorSync Features & BenefitsΩΩ• Easy installation and use: Simply drag the Macintosh ColorSync icon to your System 7 Folder and restart. ColorSync then becomes part of the Macintosh operating system.ΩΩ• Matched color every time, from one device to another, with predictable, consistent results regardless of application or device.ΩΩ• Compatibility: Works with all color-capable Macintosh computers, and designed to support all color input and output devices, including scanners, monitors, digitizers, color printers, slide makers, and imagesetters.≈≈≈≈
